Orange County Vehicle Wrap FAQ

Answers To Frequently Asked Questions

What is a vehicle wrap?

A vehicle wrap is the application of a high performance, large-format, digitally printed vinyl that adheres to your vehicle’s painted surface. You can put virtually any photo or design that you would like on your vehicle. At Monster Image in orange county, we use the leading vinyl on the market called 3M Controltac. Controltac is designed to go on smooth and bubble free and offers the best quality printing. After the life of the wrap, Control tac is also made so that it comes off clean even after 3 years.

Is the vinyl wrap print protected?

Yes, absolutely. We laminate every vehicle print. This provides durability from scratches, as well as UV protection from the sun’s rays  and slows down fading. The most ideal laminate for vehicle vinyl is our 3M High Gloss laminate. This High Gloss material is easy to wash and maintain. It can also be waxed to ensure a longer lasting life. We also Luster and Matte overlaminates as well.

How is a vehicle wrap different than paint?

Paint is permanent. Vehicle Wraps only last 4 years. However, the vinyl actually protects your car’s painted surface. It can be easily removed when it comes time to trade-in, or sell your car. In addition to being wrap installation professionals, we are also capable of striping your vehicle, should the need arise. We always use a certified professional when both installing and removing vehicle vinyl.

Will a vehicle wrap harm my vehicles surface?

A vehicle wrap protects your paint from the harmful effects of mother nature. In addition to UV protection, the vehicle wrap will stop chips, scratches, acid-rain and more.  Since the vehicle wrap is not permanent, your paint will look just as pristine as it did the day you dropped your car off to be wrapped. The benefits are two-fold. You will be adding resale value to your vehicle, all while promoting your business in orange county.

How should I care for my vehicle wrap?

A Hand wash with mild soap and water will do fine. We do recommend that the vehicle is washed regularly, as road grime can cause vehicle wrap fatigue.  Avoid pressure washers and automated car washes.

Are vehicle wraps expensive?

Compared to other options for advertisement, orange county vehicle wraps offer you the most exposure for the least amount of money. It has been said that over the course of a year, if you live in a city of 50,000, your vehicle wrap will receive 8.3 million impressions.  Compared to radio, or television advertisement, the impressions to cost ratio is significantly lower in a large city like Los Angeles.

The price of the wrap depends upon the square footage of the vehicle.  Matte, Carbon Fiber, Brushed Metal and other color change wraps, cost more than printed graphic wraps. Contact us in orange county today for a quote!

What if I do not have a design in mind?

This is something we come across on a regular basis. Not only are we wrap installers, but we are graphic design professionals. We actually recommend having our team design your wrap, as we are familiar with your vehicles intricacies that a regular graphic designer may not be aware of, such as body molding placement, gas tank door location and more.

How long does it take to wrap a vehicle?

The short answer is 2 weeks, however we make every effort to keep our clients happy, so if your needs are a bit more demanding, we are confident that we can meet your stricter requirements. In general it takes a week to flush out the design phase, a few days to print the graphics, and 2 days to install the wrap.

How do you handle wrapping windows?

Each case is specific to the design of the car, and the wishes of the client. We always wrap the back windows with a perforated vinyl that is 50% holes, and 50% vinyl. This offers you the ability to see out the back window, while adding privacy from people trying to look in. The side windows are typically wrapped with the same perforated vinyl, but may also be wrapped in the typical vehicle wrap vinyl to suit the needs of the client.

What size vehicles can you wrap?

The answer to that is simple, we can wrap any vehicle. We are wrap professionals, we can wrap something as small as a sub-compact and motorcycle, all the way up to a bus, plane, train or monster truck or building. That is the beauty of OC auto wraps, the sky is the limit.

How cost effective are vehicle wraps?

Studies conducted state that in a city of 50,000, a business with a vehicle wrap will get approximately 8.3 million impressions. Since an average vehicle wrap costs $3000, that is a significantly large impression to low cost ratio.

Can I take my wrapped car through a car wash?

It is not suggested. We recommend hand washes, as your vehicle needs to stay clean so that road grime and debris does not contaminate the vehicle wrap. We do not however suggest using a pressure washer, as this could possibly lift the edges on a vehicle wrap and present areas of failure later on down the road.

What if my logo, or contact information changes in the future?

Since all of your artwork is saved on our computers, we are easily able to make a patch to your existing vehicle wrap. This happens on a regular basis as well, and the process is typically very easy to remedy.

What if I get a dent, ding, or scrape, can it be fixed?

Depending on the amount of damage your vehicle endures depends on the ability of our wrap professionals to fix the surface. Typically most dents and dings can be fixed with minimal amounts of work. Since we save all of your files on our computers, we are able to print and produce patchwork of any size.

What's involved in a Vehicle Wrap?

Vehicle wraps, including bus wraps and fleet wraps, are comprised of three phases. The first is the design phase which includes getting accurate measurements for the vehicle and actual design of the graphics to be applied.

The second is the production phase where the graphic is printed and then laminated to protect the vinyl from abrasions and UV rays that can cause graphics to fade over time.

The third phase is installation where the vinyl is actually applied to your vehicle. In some cases there may even be a fourth phase, the removal of graphics if requested.

What's the difference between a partial and full wrap?

Anything less than a full wrap is normally called a “partial wrap.”  a half partial wrap normally includes the entire rear of the vehicle and halfway up the vehicle, and includes a hood logo.  a three-quarters partial wrap normally includes the entire rear of the vehicle and most of the way up the vehicle, and includes a hood logo.  Typically, a full wrap includes the entire surface of the vehicle.

Do I have to wash my vehicle before installation?

Yes.  All vehicles have to be free of dust, mud, wax, oil, armor-all type products, and other agents that may prevent the vinyl from adhering to the vehicle surface during the installation process.

Even if you clean the vehicle yourself your installer will still do some prep work to the vehicle to ensure it is ready for the vehicle wrap.  Most vehicles need to be high pressure washed with detergent.  After washing, it is also critical to prep the vehicle surface with degreasers, alcohols and other solvents.

Do I need to bring my vehicle in for measurements?

That depends.  There are software programs that have accurate dimension of most standard production run cars, trucks, and vans.  If your vehicle is a limited run issue, custom measurements may be needed.  Also, some installers like you to bring your vehicle in so they can take photographs and do their designs from the pictures rather than a software template.

What are the advantages of a Vehicle Wrap as opposed to a new paint job?

With vehicle wraps, a designer’s creativity and design possibilities are limitless.

For example, it is difficult to paint a photograph, but easy to digitally reproduce a photograph.  Paint simply cannot duplicate what is possible with digitally printed vinyl vehicle wraps.

Vinyl vehicle wraps are also a great way to protect your original paint underneath.  Finally, it is much easier to change your vehicle wrap vinyl graphics than to change

Should you use or require clear vinyl overlaminate for your vehicle wraps?

Absolutely, with one exception. Clear vinyl overlaminates protect the finished print from scuffing, weather, gasoline, and washing. Some overlaminates also provide fading protection from the sun, so ask your supplier.

Finally, most installers highly prefer to wrap with a vinyl that has been overlaminated because it provides much more strength during the wrapping and wrap removal processes. The only exception to clear vinyl overlaminate would be for perforated window film.

Can you wrap primered vehicles?

It is critical to test the surface of a primered vehicle. Some paint-primered surfaces do not have an acceptable bond to wrapping vinyls and need to be sanded or painted prior to installation.

Why is a color change wrap better than a paint job?

Typically, color changes using vinyl are much less expensive than a custom paint job. Additionally, when you repaint a car, you must remove the factory paint job. This can affect the value of the vehicle. When the paint is changed with a wrap product, the factory paint is actually protected and preserved for the next car buyer.

What is vehicle wrap material made of?

Vehicle wrap material is made of vinyl. The best materials are made by companies that the layperson has heard of- examples of this may be 3M or Avery. These manufacturers warranty and stand by their product. Less expensive materials are available but they are not of the same quality. Cheaper materials can remove paint when removed and wear our very quickly.

How long does a vehicle wrap last?

Vehicle wraps in a climate such as Orange County will last between 3-5 years depending on how well they are cared for. For example, a vehicle that is kept clean of road salt and dirt and stored in a garage will tend to reach the 5 year end. A vehicle that is not well cleaned and continually parked outside will have a shorter life span.

That being said, when we say a vehicle wrap will last x amount of time, we don’t mean that the wrap will just fall off one day, or that it will fade from rich color to white. A vehicle wrap ages gradually. Typically at the end of their life, you may start to see some bubbling in deep channels of the vehicle. Additionally, you may see spots of sun damage on horizontal surfaces like the hood and roof. The adhesive will last indefinitely and the wrap can be left on virtually forever. It just may not look like it did when it was fresh and new.

Can you wrap a leased vehicle?

Wrapping a leased vehicle is perfectly fine. In fact, many leasing companies prefer it because it helps to protect the paint.

Can vinyl graphics be removed easily?

Yes, vinyl graphics are easy to remove when you decide to change your look again. Typically, the adhesives used are rated for 5 years of clean removability. This means that if the wrap is removed within that timeframe, there will be no damage to the paint below.

Will a car wrap damage my paint?

If the paint of your vehicle is in good condition when the wrap goes on, it will be in good condition when the wrap comes off. No paint guarantees are available on cracking, flaking, or rusting paint.

The best way to evaluate the paint is to stop by our facility to have it inspected by a wrap specialist at Monster Image in Orange County. At this time, we will be able to determine if a vehicle wrap is a good option.

What finishes are available on wrap vinyl?

We offer multiple finishes on our car wrap material including matte, satin, semi-gloss, high gloss, and metallic. We also offer specialty wrap materials including glow in the dark, fluorescent, textured, and chrome materials. Specialty vehicle wrap materials generally cost extra and have some installation limitations.

Do you have a list of the vehicle wrap color options available?

For a full list of our available vehicle wrap colors, consult with a wrap specialist at Monster Image in Orange County. Some of our most popular car color change colors are matte black, gunmetal gray, matte white, and carbon fiber. We offer a large selection of colors and finishes to suit any taste.

Can I just wrap a portion of my vehicle?

Partial vehicle wraps are extremely popular. One of our most popular partial vehicle wrap packages includes wrapping the hood, roof, and trunk of a vehicle. With a standard material, a package like this typically costs about $1000.

Does the color of my vehicle wrap have to be solid?

No. While matte black vehicle wrap may be our most popular vehicle color change option, we can mix colors and even create custom printed graphics for your project.

My vehicle's paint is old and beat up, Is wrapping a good option?

A vehicle wrap is meant to adhere to car’s paint. However, if the paint if the vehicle is not adhered well to the metal, a vehicle wrap will fall off when the paint falls off. Also, if the vehicle paint has pitting, rust, dents, or holes, vehicle wrap is not a substitute for good body work. The good news is that if you have paint problems with your vehicle, we only need a primer surface to wrap- no need to go get an expensive paint job just to get covered with wrap.

Keeping road salt off the vehicle in winter and dirt off the vehicle in summer. Also, it is a good idea to rotate how you park your vehicle during the day in Orange County, and keep it in a garage at night.
